Sea Shepherd Ship The Farley Mowatt Seized!

Nice to see after several reported incidents these people are finally arrested for breaking the law in Canadian waters. The Sea Shepard Society is claiming that the ship is a private yacht and not subject to our laws. Well I guess they are wrong, Canada cannot and will not let people regardless of motive engage in unlawful acts in our waters, they received many warnings but felt that they were somehow exempt, now they are paying for it.

The wingnut Captain is calling it an act of war and talking up the EU and Denmark as going to save his butt. Well as a Canadian I have a message for the EU when it comes to our laws, you do not hold sway here, plus you unlawfully registered this vessel as a private yacht when in fact it is operated by a non-profit business for the purpose of conducting the stated business of the group. They also had been denied an observer permit because of previous incidents and were warned to stay clear of the hunt, they repeatedly stated that they were a private vessel and as such they were exempt from our laws and challenged the Coast Guard to act, which they did.

I for one would like to congratulate our Government for not being intimidated by this group and responding to the concerns of our citizens not some foreign registered "pleasure craft" that had no business in the area as a tourist or any other capacity. They were a danger to others and have been treated accordingly.

I have been looking on the Internet and there seems to be some confusion regarding the registry of the Farley Mowat. Paul Watson claims Dutch registry, the Sea Shepherd site claims Canadian Registry, and a article from Jan 07 claims the ship has been deregistered and is running without a flag making them, effectively by maritime law, pirates.

I will be interestested to see how this plays out, but we can be assurred that the seal hunt is over for the SSCS and Mr Watson and with any luck the inspection of the Farley Mowat will find enough violations to dry dock them for a year.

Update:

Paul Watson claims all the film footage and gear was confiscated by authorities yet a video of the RCMP boading party has materialized on the news. Strange.

As noted above regarding the registry of the ship, Paul Watson says his website is up to date with pictures taken last week, but says all his footage was seized. Yet his website clearly states the Farley Mowat is registered in Canada. Not so up to date as he contends.

So either he is a liar as he called Minister Hearns, or the magic film fairy delivered the footage to his hotel room.

They have placed a link to vote on Canada's actions on the Globeandmail.com web site urging people to vote, I went and did and after approx 15,000 votes 76% of visitors agree the Canadian Government was right. Not the response I think old Pauly boy was looking for.
